Fiscal subsidiarity
In contrast with the many shallow minds of our time, Pope Benedict XVI is a true intellectual and source of deep insights. His latest encyclical is a fine example.
There is too much in Caritas In Veritate to treat here, but one relatively minor statement leapt out at me, toward the end of paragraph 60:
... fiscal subsidiarity, allowing citizens to decide how to allocate a portion of the taxes they pay to the State. The context of this statement is development aid for poor countries, but it has the potential for much broader application. Applying it to tax-funded abortion or any other value-laden tax, the implications are profound. I hope to develop this concept in greater detail as it might relate to the pro-life tax strike.

Regarding your comments on Caritas and
Feingold: I am afraid I see the same shadow descending on Catholic Charities that has already eclipsed Amnesty International (which has now morphed into a rabid pro-abortion advocacy group). Catholic Charities has accepted a huge government grant (100 million)
and has a seat on the "Faith-Based" committee...rewarded for being uncritical of Obamacare and mandated abortion. Money talks and money shuts up those who should speak up and say "Nay". CC, like Feingold, is pretending the bill doesn't "really" mandate abortion and if it did, why everyone knows CC is "against" it, (in theory only). Meanwhile, CC urges immediate passage of Obamacare.
Shirley -
Do you have a source that you can share? The CC front page refutes your fear with these words:
"In response to inaccurate online media reports, Catholic Charities USA states unequivocally that it does not support any plan to reform health care and/or any proposed legislative provision that allows or promotes the funding of abortions or that compels any health care provider or institution to provide such a service..."
Is this a false denial? Having no first-hand knowledge, i'm just asking. Many credible sources are reporting on the House resolution that almost came up for a vote, that it contains provisions for mandatory abortion coverage, tax-funding of same, mandatory end-of-life 'counseling', and no conscience clause, to name a just a few horrible aspects. I don't know what version of health care reform is being encouraged by CC. I could not find much in the way of specifics.
I am leary of a Church endorsement of what seems to be an inherently socialist idea, regardless of the specifics. Even were socialism OK, is the U.S. government one to be trusted in such matters?
I sent you some info from Americans United for Life (AUL) who were very instrumental in stopping FOCA as a block bill this fall. Their lawyers are very good as untangling deceptive language. And the air is thick with that.
Thank you, Shirley, for the research, especially Gilbert's article. The ties between CC and Obama seem quite suspicious as you say.
